This chronological survey of American literature covers major and minor works of fiction, non‐fiction, drama and poetry from the Puritan era to the Twentieth‐Century. Several major novels will also be studied including The Scarlet Letter, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Grapes of Wrath. Discussion will focus on writing trends and societal influence on those writing trends. The course will cover more material more quickly than English 11. The curriculum includes writing literary analysis papers originating from works studied, persuasive papers and a multi‐genre project. The course also includes vocabulary work. Motivated, self‐directed students who feel they would like to take a more active role in their learning and are capable of additional challenge are encouraged to enroll. Three college credits (ENGL 238) will be offered through William Penn University, but the student must complete the entire year of College American Literature.
